Act F.A.S.T in stroke

Cerebrovascular accidents / Stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain is occluded leading to lack of blood supply and oxygen to a certain region of the brain, leading to brain injury.

Time is of the essence and could make the difference between life and death. It is important therefore to recognize the tell tale signs of a stroke.

Some signs of a stroke are

- drooping of the mouth

- weakness and /or numbness over one side of the body

- slurred speech

- nausea, vomiting

- altered mental status

If one suspects someone is suffering from a stroke, use the pseudonym F A S T to assess him/ her

F: FACIAL asymmetry

A: unable to lift or feel his ARMS

S: drooping of the mouth when asked to SMILE

T: TIME is of the essence - call 995 immediately if he/she fulfills the above
